Architect: Heinle, Wischer und Partner
Structural Engineer: StudioC
Client: MDC
I photographed this building, which was created for the sole purpose of housing a Cryo-Electron Microscope, for the structural engineer StudioC. To give an idea of the relative importance of the microscope at the core of the structure, total construction costs were €2.5m, while the microscope itself is €5m.
As the microscope is extremely sensitive to even small vibrations (e.g. the campus bus), StudioC worked to achieve an isolated 5.25m high concrete core. In the pictures it was important, that as well as telling the story of the building in general that it is also possible to appreciate this isolation.
