Joe Clark is an architectural photographer based in Berlin, working with practices, developers, and interior and spatial designers across Europe. He has over fifteen years of professional experience and a fine art background that shapes how he reads and photographs the built environment.
Approach
Joe studied at the Slade School of Art in London before building his architectural photography practice. That background shapes how he reads a building, how he communicates with architects, and what the final images look like. He understands what is at stake when a practice commissions photography of a completed project: proof of life - honouring the intention while showing how a project makes contact with reality.
He works with a high level of compositional precision: spatial relationships are described honestly. Every image is built with care for the way a space feels.
Post-production is in-house. Every image passes through Joe's hands. This is where the look and feel of the work is cemented - not something he hands off.
Process
Every project begins with a briefing stage: site plans, renderings or reference images, a shot list or open brief, and a conversation about timing and natural light. Joe typically works on site for one or two days, shooting tethered when collaboration with an art director or designer is needed, working solo when speed and instinct serve the project better. Solo working tends to generate more assets more quickly, allowing him to be more nimble and chase the light through a building over the course of a day.
A proofing gallery follows for client-guided image selection. The proofing process can span just days or weeks, with retouching notes and client involvement through to final sign-off. This process is calibrated to the complexity of the project and the number of stakeholders involved.
Stakeholders
Architectural projects often serve more than one client. A single commission can be structured to meet the needs of the architect, the developer, the interior designer, and any other stakeholders involved. Joe manages these joint briefs routinely, ensuring every party receives images suited to their use without duplicating the shoot.
Location
Joe has been based in Berlin since 2014 and has photographed architectural projects across Germany, the UK, and continental Europe. For architectural photography in Berlin, practices benefit from local availability, fast turnaround, and an architecture photographer embedded in the city for over a decade. He is equally available for projects elsewhere in Germany and across Europe.
If you have a project coming up, Joe would be glad to hear about it. Email studio@joeclark.photo with a brief outline, the location, and your timeline.
A briefing stage to understand the project and agree on a shot list, one to two days on site, a proofing gallery for image selection, and in-house post-production through to final delivery. Typical deliverable: ten to thirty images depending on project scope.
Yes. Joint commissions are common. I structure shoots to serve the needs of multiple stakeholders, ensuring each party receives images suited to their specific use, whether that is a competition entry, a project monograph, or marketing material.
As early as possible, if the shoot depends on specific light conditions, seasonal foliage, or weather. Two to four weeks' notice is typical for standard projects, though shorter timelines can sometimes be accommodated.
Standard delivery includes medium JPEG for general use, large JPEG for high-quality applications, and uncompressed TIFF in Adobe RGB for archive and print. Formats can be adjusted to your needs.
